Lymph node locations on a ferret

Lymph nodes in ferrets

Spread the love

What are lymph nodes and why are they an important to check ?

Lymph nodes are small kidney bean shaped organs that run along the route of the regional lymphatic vessels. They are an encapsulated mass of lymphoid tissue supported by dense connective tissue. Their function is to filter lymph, bacteria or other particles. They also produce and store the T and B lymphocytes.

As lymph nodes are responsible for for draining lymph from specific regions of the body it is a good indication of the health status of that area.

Some lymph nodes are quite superficial and can be palpated particularly if they become enlarged or diseased.

In ferrets the lymph nodes that should be especially checked are

1.submandibular (below the jaw)

2.axillary (arm pit)

3.inguinal (groin area)

4.popliteal (roughly behind the knee)

Location of lymph nodes to check

Firm or irregular glands should warrant investigation as could be a sign of an infection, cancer, inflammation in other parts of the body .

So next time you have a ferret in your nurse clinic be sure to have a good feel and let the vet know if you find any abnormalities.

This is also something owners can check at home.
