Why Ferrets?

Spread the love

My love for the mustelid family was ignited when I began working for a company that specialises in animal assisted therapy . As part of a small team we took animals onto mental health wards, brain injury units and care homes.

One of the most popular characters we had in our little animal family was a beautiful skunk named ‘Jethro’ . He was such a sweet and gentle character. When you first hear the word skunk you think of a certain cartoon character with the ability to spray a disgusting fluid that can make you smell for days . Well not Jethro , he was a friendly boy who just wanted to sit on your knee and be stroked until he fell asleep.

I adored him, I loved the way he tootled around and bounced when playing.

I wanted my own Jethro but my living situation was not set up for owing a skunk .

My love for the Mustelid family soon brought my attention to ferrets.

So why ferrets?

Sometimes referred to as the carpet snake or the fuzz butt Ferrets are playful little creatures that are full of character. They make ideal pets for a busy life as they can sleep for around 18 hours a day . When I first picked up my two hobs I was instantly in love. They became my world and completely stole my heart.

I soon found out why their name comes from the Latin word furittus, meaning ‘little theif’ when I began searching for missing keys and socks only to find a little stash behind the bed.

Although being kits from the same litter my boys had totally different personalities. Smokey was more confident and cheeky while Bandit seemed more gentle and clumsy.

I would love to watch them dance around the room playing with rough and tumble.

When I started training to become a veterinary nurse I would get excited when anything to do with ferrets came up in my studies or when we had any ferret patients in the surgery. I couldn’t wait to qualify so I could spend some time focusing my attention to learning everything I could about these amazing creatures.

Why I’m a ferret nurse

So here I am beginning my journey into becoming Anna the ferret nurse.

My aim is to gain knowledge and experience to share with the world …. for anyone who is interested in ferrets , ferret owners and veterinary professionals.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog as much I’m going to enjoy writing it.
